BALUBA / LUBA

Baluba/Luba is one of the indigenous tribes from Katanga region which prospered in the Upemba Depression. The Baluba tribesmen speak Luba-Kasai, Luba-Katanga and Swahili. This is a tribe that for hundreds of years dominated the Katanga, Kasai and the Maniema regions in the central Republic of Congo.

As early as the 5th century AD, the Luba people were known to have identified themselves as a people and it is from around people that the tribe started dominating the Upemba region which is very rich in natural resources. Over the centuries, the mastery of trading activities helped the tribe trade for copper and other materials with people from as far as the Indian Ocean.

They did master the art of making exotic masks and figurines signifying the different gods in their culture. Indeed, the sculptures and the very divine masks are still present and are still revered as such by the people.
